The development of state adolescent health plans is a federal priority, and we are joining an elite group of states that have developed frameworks to systematically address adolescent health issues. New Hampshire will be the sixth state to have such a plan. The Adolescent Health Strategic Planning Project (AHSPP) also responds to Healthy New Hampshire 2010, which calls for the development of programs and policies that promote healthy behaviors, create healthy environments, and increase access to quality health care.

Phase one of the Adolescent Health Strategic Planning Project included a needs assessment, a gaps analysis, and a review of national recommendations and research regarding adolescent health. Based on the results of this work, project staff generated a basic framework of recommendations and objectives. The plan is based on a positive youth development perspective and includes nine specific recommendations focused on building the capacity of all youth to become healthy, productive adults and developing strategies to reach out to the most vulnerable youth. Helping families and communities support the health and well being of adolescents in the state also is central to the plan.

Phase Two of the plan was an Adolescent Health Summit. On October 3, 2003 the Adolescence Resource Center, in partnership with the NH Bureau of Maternal and Child Health, hosted “Supporting Youth, Investing in New Hampshire: The Adolescent Health Summit” at the Center of New Hampshire in Manchester, New Hampshire. The overarching goals of the Summit were to review the Adolescent Health Strategic Planning Project (AHSPP) and develop concrete implementation and action strategies.
